/ ABOUT

The Greek GEO Office (GGO) has been operating at the National Observatory of Athens since 2007, under the supervision of the Greek General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT). It is the main representative of Greece in the Intergovernmental Initiative of the UN named GEO (Group on Earth Observation) and the national contact point for Earth Observation (EO). Its operation focuses on the coordinated and effective participation of Greece in the global and regional activities of GEO and its purpose is to maximize synergies between the main partners of EO in Greece, involving different communities of users, stakeholders, and industry. Additionally, GGO seeks to communicate relevant funding opportunities, catalyzing the creation and networking of the national EO community. To these ends, GGO is active in various GEO working groups, in organizing regional workshops, as well as in participating in regional initiatives in which it assumes a connecting and coordinating role, while promoting the principles of open exchange of data, information and knowledge.

/ MANDATE

GGO, as the focal point of GEO activities in Greece, addresses the need for a permanent coordination mechanism of GEOSS activities at the national level, at the same time building interfaces with GEO and the Greek State. Its main vision is to act as a springboard for the implementation of GEOSS in Greece and promote collaboration within the country but also with neighboring countries with proven capacity in the field. GGO has as a main goal to address the EO capacities, capabilities, gaps, and needs according to the three (3) GEO’s Priority Engagements, namely Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development Goals in Greece. For this GGO interfaces with the Public Sector, Research Institutes and Universities, Companies, Civil Society Organizations and other stakeholders so as to promote the use of Earth Observations, harmonize and enable data sharing among providers, scientists and policy makers.
